There are not many outdoor sporting events where a sudden downpour improves your chances, but that is exactly what happened when Jack Crowther returned to Wetherby Lions Flat Cap Throwing Contest at Tockwith Show on Saturday (7th August).

A soggy cap enabled Jack, pictured receiving his trophy, to improve on his previous throw with a record-breaking 18 metres 60.

The Flat Cap Throwing contest was introduced to the show last year to commemorate Yorkshire Day and has provided competitive rivalry between friends and an opportunity for kids to embarrass Dad, while raising £150 for charity.

On Wednesday, 4th August it was the turn of Wetherby and Knaresborough Lions to host our German guests during their one week visit to the UK . We spent an enjoyable day at Beamish where the rain threatened but didn’t spoil a day in the open air.

The Youth Exchange is a partnership between Bad Soden Allendorf Lions club and Yorkshire Lions clubs in Garforth, Leeds, Leeds Skyrack, Knaresborough, Wetherby, Rothwell, Otley and York. Each year a group travels either from the UK to Germany or from Germany to the UK.

Flat cap throwing contest at Tockwith Show

To celebrate being Yorkshire, Wetherby Lions ran a flat cap throwing contest at Tockwith Show. Showing typical Tyke cunning the winner waited until a heavy shower had passed before taking advantage of the improved chuckability of a sodden cap and achieved a distance of 18metres 60cm to win the annual trophy.

the local branch of Lions International, which covers Wetherby and the surrounding villages of Walton, Thorp Arch, Boston Spa, Collingham, Clifford and Bramham.

A member of Lions International, with the motto “We Serve”, the club is a service organisation which fundraises for charitable purposes and cooperates with other charities and not-for-profit organisations to help them achieve their aims.

Beneficiaries of the club’s charity account and charitable trust include local, national and international causes, helped by the international nature of the Lions organisation.
